The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced May 27 that it expects an, “active to extremely active” hurricane season, which officially began June 1. Should a local or statewide disaster arise, the West Central Texas Area Information Center in Abilene is one of three call centers in Texas that immediately activates emergency disaster operations to serve callers in need of related emergency assistance. This allows callers throughout Texas to access the unique resources and information available during disaster situations. Other call centers may handle overflow as needed.
Community investment review teams heard presentations about 32 community programs May 27 as part of United Way of Abilene’s 2011 investment process. The presentations provided community investment review volunteers with an opportunity to learn more about the various applicant programs prior to making recommendations for investment to the United Way Board of Directors in July.
Today United Way of Abilene learned that the Community Action Program of Taylor County has suspended its operations. United Way and 2-1-1 will assess the impact of this decision on the community in the coming weeks. Additionally, United Way plans to meet with other service providers to determine the best course of action moving forward to ensure basic needs are met for all citizens. Individuals requiring services previously provided by CAP should call 2-1-1 to connect with other community resources that may be able to assist them.
United Way of Abilene, in collaboration with Abilene Independent School District, will continue to promote student success and self-sufficiency among families in West Central Texas through an interactive program for local area students and parents, scheduled for May 18, 19 and 20. Aim for Success will encourage students at local area middle schools to achieve their goals and resist the various negative influences and pressures they face daily.
After assisting approximately 725 people with tax return preparation, the West Central Texas Center for Economic Opportunity will launch Money Power University, May 6, to help community members achieve financial success. The financial empowerment course consists of eight, 2-hour sessions designed to help community members improve their current financial situation and achieve their financial goals.
Community investment applications are available online for organizations seeking a United Way investment for 2011. All applications must be received by noon, April 27, for consideration. This year United Way of Abilene’s West Central Texas Center for Economic Opportunity has worked to help over 600 families claim approximately $1.3 million in refunds and save over $85,000 in preparation fees, but it’s not over yet. With two weeks left
until April 15th the United Way of Abilene is encouraging more families to save money on tax preparation fees and file for free by visiting the Center located at 1102 N. 3rd St. The Center for Economic Opportunity will extend its hours of operation on Saturday, April 10th by serving the public from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
The Abilene Area FEMA-Emergency Fund and Shelter Program Board announces the Phase XXVIII award for $60,734. The announcement of funds for Phase 28 had been delayed pending Congressional action. Consequently, the application and review period will be short to enable the EFSP Board to get the funds into the hands of providers as soon as possible.
United Way of Abilene held its Annual Meeting today at the Abilene Civic Center. More than 500 business, community and non-profit organization leaders came together for the seated luncheon.
People who work but don’t earn a lot of money may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, as well as free help preparing their tax return. Friday, January 29, 2010 marks National EITC Awareness Day, a nationwide effort to increase public awareness about EITC and free community tax centers.

United Way of Abilene welcomed over 350 guests aboard the USS LIVE UNITED on Thursday, October 29. Known to some as the Taylor County Expo Center Round Building, the “ship” set sail on a fun island excursion to Gilligan’s Island.
United Way of Abilene welcomed guests aboard the USS LIVE UNITED, known to some as the Expo Center Round Building, Thursday September 24th. A delicious Texas-style “luau” was provided by H-E-B and Coca Cola Enterprises provided the drinks. Over 400 people were in attendance.
The Center officially opened on January 26th. The West Central Texas Center for Economic Opportunity, a Community Initiative led by the United Way of Abilene, will assist working families with free preparation of their 2008 Income Tax returns and ensure that they claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), if they are eligible.
